Day 1 - Friday, June 20: US Airport Stopover
We will plan to overnight in the US before flying to Newfoundland to make for the best airport connections.
Day 2 - Saturday, June 21: Deer Lake - Cow Head (D)
Today we will arrive in Deer Lake, Newfoundland - our arrival is late in the evening and we will have had dinner on our own en-route flying to Newfoundland. We will check into our hotel for three nights and get ready for our holiday to begin tomorrow.
Day 3 - Sunday, June 22: Gros Morne (B, D)
This morning we will travel to Rocky Harbor and onto Norris Point, where we will take a cruise out on beautiful Bonne Bay with unique views of Gros Morne mountain and the Tablelands. Then it’s on to Gros Morne National Park. Gros Morne was declared a World heritage Site in 1987 and offers some of Newfoundland’s most spectacular scenery. Contributing to this unique designation are the area’s significant geological features, the arctic-alpine habitat of the Long Range Mountains, the outstanding scenic beauty and the region’s 5000-year-old human history. It is this area that earned Gros Morne National Park its UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE TABLELANDS status and its nickname as the 'Galapagos of Plate Tectonics'. The only place on the planet where the earth’s mantle has broken through the earth’s surface to form this unique mountain top. Dinner is included today.
Day 4 - Monday, June 23: Rocky Harbor (B, D, Entertainment)
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY US! Today we will enjoy Rocky Harbor and regular views of the surrounding mountains and the beautiful bays as we discover what life is really like. We will experience the lives of the fishing families at Broom Point Fishing Premises. We will see the Jenniex House and Look Out giving us one of the finest photographic spots in Western Newfoundland. Urve Manuel’s Glass Station is a very unique stop with a full gallery and shopping. Even its location sparks inspiration with the crystal clear light bouncing around the studio bringing the glass art to life. Tonight, we will experience a traditional Kitchen Party before settling in for our final night in Western Newfoundland.
Day 5 - Tuesday, June 24: Cow Head - Gander (B, D)
Have your camera at the ready as your time in Gros Morne National Park draws to a close. Later travel through central Newfoundland and on to Gander, where you spend two nights. Gander is nestled in the heart of Newfoundland and the site of Gander International Airport, once an important refueling stop for transatlantic aircraft, and still a preferred emergency landing point for aircraft facing on-board medical or security issues. During your time in Gander, you will find out the inspiration for the book - The Day the World Came to Town, following the 9/11 tragedy. Enjoy a visit to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum to see how aviation has played a crucial role in the development of Gander.
Day 6 - Wedensday, June 25: Twillingate (B, D)
A scenic drive along the rocky coast of Notre Dame Bay leads to the beautiful outport of Twillingate. Twillingate embodies everything so many Newfoundland and Labrador outports (a community where the sea was their only “road”) are famous for: stunning coastline, historical, picturesque streets, culturally-rich entertainment and peaceful country roads. Visit the Long Point Lighthouse then you are off to the Prime Berth Fishing & Heritage Centre, comprised of hundred-year-old fish stores, stages and flakes. Touch a 15-meter Sei whale skeleton and view life from under the sea with the live underwater camera. Return to your hotel for your final night in Gander.
Day 7 - Thurday, June 26: Gander - St. John’s (B, D)
Head out on the Trans-Canada Highway to visit Terra Nova National Park, the most easterly of Canada's beautiful national parks. Abundant natural resources, such as fish and sea mammals, have attracted people to the Terra Nova area for at least 5,000 years. Keep your camera close at hand for wildlife along the way. Travel to Conception Bay and marvel at the rugged coastline and deep clear water that is so attractive to many types of whales. Visit Heart’s Content Cable Station Provincial Historic Site where the first successful transatlantic cable was received in 1866. Also visit Harbour Grace, where Amelia Earhart began her solo flight across the Atlantic in 1932. Continue your journey to Cupid’s Cove where you will stop at The Plantation: home to Canada’s first English settlers. Travel to St. John’s where you will be staying the next three nights.
Day 8 - Friday, June 27: St. John’s (B, D)
Arrive in the capital city of St. John's, Canada’s oldest and most distinctive city, for a two-night stay. Rising spectacularly from the water’s edge, St. John’s combines a modern city with small town hospitality. St. John’s is full of history and life. During a city tour, see the quaint side streets of a thousand colours, the Victorian architecture of the downtown area, the busy modern waterfront, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Confederation building, charming Quidi Vidi village and the panoramic view from Signal Hill National Historic Site.
Day 9- Saturday, June 28: St. John’s - Witless Bay (B, D)
This morning, travel to Bay Bulls for one of the highlights of your trip, a boat tour to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve (weather permitting). Witless Bay is alive with the rhythm of four million wings beating and of 40 tonne whales pulsing through clear blue water. The reserve contains North America's largest Atlantic puffin colony more than 260,000 pairs of the province's official bird nest here during the late spring and summer. The waters around Bay Bulls and the Reserveis afavoritefeeding area for the annualmigration of the Humpback Whales that make their way to thewaters of Newfoundland each summer. All of your senses will be delighted during an educational and entertaining boat tour. On returning to St. John’s, you will visit the incredible ’Rooms’ Museum depicting Newfoundland’s cultural heritage in one of the most unique museums in the world. Visit the most easterly point in North America, Cape Spear National Historic Site; the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland is located at the most easterly point of land in North America. The remainder of the day (afternoon) is free to explore on your own. Tonight, you will meet with the group for a traditional farewell “Jiggs Dinner”.
Day 10 - Sunday, June 29: Flight Home (B)
Transfer to the St. John’s International Airport where you will bid farewell to Newfoundland and return home with many fond memories of your time in Newfoundland.
